In the post-war period, modern architects, were called upon to build large housing estates. In the name of hygiene, good orientation and ventilation, they paid almost exclusive attention to built volumes and housing to the detriment of outdoor spaces. From the 1960s, while the access to healthy housing and the social and spatial project satisfied, more or less, the working classes, a widespread discourse denounced the exterior space degradation, segregation, violence and anomie. Today, the revitalization programs of large housing estates, include a reflection on the development of the interface between private, public, collective and outdoor spaces.

Our purpose is to explore the new collective spaces in France and in eastern and western Europe. We will discuss their importance in planning processes and for the inhabitants, and collective spaces as a theatre of conflict and living together
